, thank you, sir. >> thank you. >> greta: now to a very disturbing question. did the obama administration just flat out lie? the obama administration did know from day one that the attack in our consulate in banghazi was terrorism. why didn't they tell us? is there some reasonable explanation? let's ask state department official hi liz cheney. why didn't we get the truth from the get-go? >> one you heard the president's speech in virginia, he said al-qaeda is on a path to defeat and osama bin laden is dead. that's their success, that somehow the killing of bin laden has ended the war. it's an inconvenient fact for them politically if in fact al-qaeda is resurgent across north africa, in the gulf, as we've seen now in the last few days. so for them to have to come out and say this was a terrorist attack on an american official, an assassination of an american official by al-qaeda on september 11th, really, you know, after they had just had a week of spiking the football at their own convention makes things very difficult for templately. >> greta: for the life of me i don't understand why t

evidence that mitt romney is pulling ahead. dick morris. we'll find out. plus, the obama administration is incompetent, confused, or flat-out lying? u.s. intelligence shows we knew terrorists attacked our consulate in libya and it was confirmed within 24 hours. why the charade? >> what happened initially, it was a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired in cairo as a consequence of the video. >> as i said last week, as our ambassador to the united nations said on sunday, as i said the other day, based on what we know and now, and knew at the time, we have no evidence of a preplanned or premeditated attack. >> two sources have told fox that within 24 hours of the attack, all of the evidence that the u.s. intelligence committee had at that time pointed to a terrorist attack, and that it was the work of a specific group related to al-qaeda and its affiliate in that area. >> obama sends his surrogates out to lie about the -- about the cause and the nature of the attacks. obama created a conspiracy theory, and coordinated a campaign of deceit to distract from the truth that affects

with the israeli ambassador to the united states, michael orin. >> has the obama administration made clear enough for your government where the red line is? >> the obama administration said time and again they're determined to prevent iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. the red line is designed to show -- help persuade the united states where, how you can achieve that goal of preventing iran from acquiring military nuclear capabilities. >> you make aistinction between acquiring or having the capability of having a nuclear weapon? >> well, the capability from our perspective would probably set up a nuclear arms race in the middle east. it would greatly impair our ability to respond to terrorist attacks say from lebanon or gaza. if we defend ourselves, whether iran could break out and use a nuclear weapon and it could do so in a small room somewhere, put this bomb together. this is a country half the size of europe. there's a good chance you're not going to know where that room is. what we're saying is the one part of this nuclear program that we can see, because there's a warhead part, there's a

night who said this is a failure of the obama administration. do you see it as that, the way, what we're seeing in the arab spring, what we're seeing happen in libya? >> i think obviously because of the tragedy that we have to know whether measures could have been taken and there is already evidence coming -- forthcoming, including chris' diary that there were threats and you know, i think we need to investigate that aspect of it. but this is still a very dangerous part of the world. we still have these jihadists coming across their borders. if there's anything we can help them with, it's border security. and so all i can say is it's a great tragedy and i'm not so concerned about the fact there may have been intelligence failures as i am about not telling the american people the truth. >> senator mccain, thank you. >> thanks for having me back on. >>> you can see the whole interview with senator mccain shortly on ac360.com. let us know what you think. we're on facebook, follow us on twitter. >>> a short time ago, secretary of state hillary clinton sat down with israeli prime minister

. that's why the good reporting is valuable. to somehow damn the obama administration seems premature. >> lookinlooking in the prison testimony they knew 24 hours after that it was a terrorist attack and believed it was al-qaeda and labeled it as such terrorist attack, the action and statements after the 24 hours an sunday show, susan rice come in to focus. >> not only do you have leon panetta at c.i.a. saying it took a while to get that information. >> bret: at defense. >> at defense. and you have general petraeus at c.i.a. saying you know what? when he testified it was not terrorism at that point. i think the intelligence is at fault if you want to say that. difficult environment. the intelligence, nobody intentionally deceiving anybody. >> bret: charles? >> question is not the wisdom of the libya operation. question is the honesty of the obama administration. this was deception on the part of the administration and sending susan rice to say this is spontaneous demonstration when you reported it was known inside the administration within a day it was not. it was a terror attack. why

to respond? the national debt has gone in the nearly four years of the obama administration from more than $10 trillion to now more than $16 trillion, an increase of $6 trillion. >> well, first of all, wolf, let me just say this. the two wars have cost us an enormous amount of money and the loss of our brave servicemen and women as well. so that added to the national deficit. and one other thing that we should talk about in terms of the national deficit, part of it is that we're not bringing in as much revenue as we should be bringing in to pay for all the things, the services and programs that the american people continue to desire. there's no question under this president that we've seen, you know, the most significant budget cuts also in the history of country. discretionary spending is at its lowest in 60 years. taxes are also at their lowest. but the one thing that the democrats have not done, we haven't walked away from the table. we haven't pointed fingers and said it's their fault. we're all in this together. it's time republicans roll up their sleeves and come to the table so we c

at the obama administration's evolving attempts to explain who's responsible for the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. is the confusion becoming a political liability? and mitt romney says he has a little secret. you're going to hear him predict he'll win a state most experts think is safely in president obama's column. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we're down to just 39 days until the presidential election. in about 20 minutes the president begins a series of fundraisers right here in washington. those are the only public events on his calendar today. yet this is the same day the president didn't have time for a face-to-face meeting with the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu who's in new york. instead they spoke by phone. here's cnn's white house correspondent dan lothian. dan. >> reporter: wolf, the white house always stresses that the president and prime minister netanyahu are in touch frequently. they downplay any daylight between the two leaders. but they didn't meet face-to-face this week. and so one phone call is getting a lot of attention.

enforcement one of the reasons why the obama administration embraced it, but it's all about how these things are represented and what they're obligated to say when your pants down. do you believe in enforcing these laws been problematic are not? and when you say -- the whole idea of the. >> translator: is that these aren't the good kids. many -- i think they're right. it doesn't mean that they're a bad kid. community college or maybe you have got in trouble when you're a teenager. i think there is something very disingenuous about the debate we have around us, but of course that is because advocates of destruction debate in the certain white. this is rooted in any kind of believes that our prior to the way that we actually structure the conversation. i think that advocates have structured the conversation very advantageous sleep. >> a couple more questions in the month to cut off. i was wondering if you could and testimonials in terms of looking forward toward the democratic party strength. >> and also the gentleman over there. >> thank you. thanks to the forum today. the panelists. i can gi

accident. had nothing to do with the obama administration's treatment of israel. >> everyone in america who took that division. >> she said it had everything to do with the increasingly conservative nature spent she's in that job because she will say things like that. >> she was saying the jews that vote in your district are just naturally more religious and more conservative, and they are republican. >> but in prior elections always voted democratic. >> but if there is a common, right, that this is the most informed part of the american electorate. >> your district? >> no, the jewish community. whether they're in florida or virginia or wherever. and that isn't going to go away. and i think as the election becomes more focused and the issues become clear, the divide will be more pronounced. >> mr. mayor, it is a little confusing when you think about the 2012 race, especially if israel is in your sidelines making decisions, confusing. on the one hand, you have what is clearly an icy relationship between the prime minister of israel and the president of the united states. it doesn't feel warm

campaign for comment, but they did not return our calls. the obama administration has proposed revising estate planning rules. and one option would be ending this tax benefit. >> it would affect estate planning as we know it. this is something that is commonly done day in and day out and has been for many years. >> that liberal group americans for tax fairness action fund is now calling on release his gift tax returns. that will show more details on how much the couple gifted to their children and grandchildren over the years and how much they paid in taxes, wolf. >> lisa, thanks very much. >>> and you're in "the situation room." happening now, the israeli prime minister draws a chilling red line for iran at the united nations. does it mean military action is imminent? i'll ask the israeli ambassador to the united states this hour. also, syrian rebels scoring new victories on the battlefield thanks possibly to help from expats living right here in the united states. and a new twist in one of america's greatest unsolved mysteries. will drilling into a driveway finally uncover the remains

with the relationship and israel and netanyahu and the sense in the obama administration's part if they can get lieu this election and survive sort of the attacks coming from netanyahu and his allies in the united states, they can emerge in a much stronger place after november to pursue a course maybe not in line with where the hawks are in this country. they don't want to be pressured into a situation where nat ya hu is going to act before the election, forced to take a position before the election more hawkish than they want to go. they feel the leverage will be different if they get through this election after everything said about how weak obama is on iran, and thrown israel under the bus, get the through and wins no measurable drop in jewish support, we're talking about -- my turn, the dynamics -- >> it's going around. >> you know, little known fact wasn't covered much by the press but the obama administration, secretary clinton, delisted real iranian resistance group always a thorn in the side of iran, iran put heavy pressure on the united states to keep on the foreign terrorist list, the mek

in public for days and weeks afterward, top members of the obama administration continued to tell a different story saying for days after it was a spontaneous protest that got out of hand. that attack killed four americans including our ambassador to libya, chris stevens and four days after they were told, intel knew there was a terrorist attack, this is what the administration sent our u.n. ambassador on the sunday shows to tell america. >> the best assessment we have today is that in fact this was not a preplanned, premeditated attack. that what happened initially was it was a spontaneous, reaction to what had just transpired in cairo. as a consequence of the video. our current assessment is that what happened in benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what transpired hours before in cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in cairo, which were prompted of course by the video. what our assessment is as of the present is in fact what it began spontaneously in benghazi, as a reaction to what had transpired some hours earlier in cairo. meg

't heard the obama administration do that yet. is that the issue right now? >> well, as the prime minister said to the general assembly today, wolf, the drawing of the red line is designed to give diplomacy and sanctions more time to work. we believe by drawing that red line you won't be increasing the chances of military engagement, you'll be significantly lessening the chances of a military engagement because the iranians have been presented with red lines in e past in trai of hormuz and they've backed down. we know they can see the color red. we're engaged in a conversation with the obama administratio about setting limits to iran's enrichment process because that's the part of the iranian nuclear program that we can actually see and mor. and that the part that's in facilities that areservle and are still lnerable. and so the obama administration's engaging with in a dialogue t it. you mention tt the secretary of state will be meeting with the prime minister this evening. thidengt willalking netanyahu tomorrow. th p of an ongoing dialogue that we've had to reach an understanding about

public perceives the comments is all that matters when you go to the polls. the obama administration was successful in selling this as a spontanous reaction and the media was successful in saying that romney jumped the gun those are the impressions that are left in the american's people's mind it is hard it go back and change perceptions that are in the american people's. >> brian: the president shows the president lost five poigns on the foreign policy aruval rating. but president obama has to feel good about another national poll that shows him with a lead if it was head-to-head with and we were not doing the electoral system. he's up on ryan where we are a dead heat. he is up over president obama. >> it is within the margin of error. it is essence a close race. battle ground polls that came out i believe it was newscast left was touth a big wide margin that obama is widening on romney. they are skewed and we talk body it. >> brian: our science is not skewed. >> gretchen: president obama up five points. >> they are over polling. >> gretchen: over all president obama is up in the fo

are making is that for political reasons the obama administration downplayed this notion of this being an act of terror, pre-planned, any association with al qaeda. they were just wanting to show it's not happening on the president's watch. and they couldn't be blamed for this, if you will, the shotty if you will security that was at that consulate in benghazi. >> wolf, it may take some weeks now to get to the bottom of that. and whether or not that was -- it was dick kated by politics the initial response. we see today senator john kerry, aemocrat the senate asking the right questions. these are questions that others memberenof thee and house are also sking. so ihi you ought to expect we will see extensive hearings and investigation on this>> now the week that f agents who have bnt tselibya to investigate, they still have not beenble to get to the scene of thisro actionn bengzi. they're basically holed hundreds of miles away in tripoli, the capital. you have new information? >> that's right, wolf. so you've got a handful -- u've got some fbi agents in tripoli waiting todeploo benghazi. yove

-qaeda-related or linked attack in libya or not and the obama administration hanging up on the video for a long time. >> well, when i saw ambassador rice continue to say that the attacks were the result of a spontaneous effort and our relationship with israel is at a high, you know, i shutter to think, you know, why -- why the administration would go down that road and say that when they knew that the libyan president was saying something different. hillary clinton was saying something different. clearly in my experience, when you have two people show up with shoulder-fired rockets at a moment's notice, it's not spontaneous. it's clear to me that it was a planned and calculated event. >> greta: and i should add, you are a montana state senator. state senator, thank you, sir, for joining us. >> well, thank you very much. greta, have great day. >> greta: thank you, sir. straight ahead, she stole the show in tampa. tonight ann romney is here to go on the record. no one knows mitt romney better. you will too. mrs. romney is next. also she's a republican, she's black, running for congress, and could be t

ahmadinejad is one of the persons that was torturing political prisoners. >> but the obama administration is not for regime change in iran. it shows a level of weakness that's dangerous. i call it provocative weakness. >> four years of the iranian dictatorship adding centrifuges every year, financing terrorism around the world. the only long-term solution is to deal directly with the dictatorship and replace it. >> it is yom kippur. how do you feel that this man is giving this hate-filled rhetoric behind us in the u.n. building on this day? >> i'm extremely angry. i'm very embarrassed as to what happened in my city. i think it's a damaging reflection on the u.n. it tells you how little respect the u.n. has for the state of israel. >> governor richardson, you are the u.n ambassador to the u.n. what is your reaction on president ahmadinejad speaking on yom kippur? >> it's unfortunate, the timing. every held of state can speak at the u.n. >> greta: protesters are fired up. why isn't the white house? iranian president ahmadinejad not only spoke at the u.n., but did it on the most important je

of military action. the obama administration is very comfortable with tough sanctions on iran and may be an area of some agreement. >> perhaps tougher sanctions because netanyahu's incredibly clear talking with his diagram the three different stages if you will of the uranium enrichment before the metaphorical fuse would be lit and would be complete next spring or next summer. you, fareed, spoke with the man that prime minister netanyahu was very directly targeting, that being the president of iran, mahmoud ahmadinejad. let me just play a little bit of your conversation and then we'll talk on the other side. >> you have indicated that you think that the israeli prime minister's threats toward iran are ones you don't take very serious seriously. but i was wondering how seriously you take the rhetoric of the president of the united states. president obama said at the united nations that he was determined to prevent iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. do you regard that as a bluff? >> translator: you set forth two or three questions here. i have never used the word bluff. when we say we

little gamble. >> there's no track. the obama administration tried very hard. >> what is it they don't want to us talk about? on the edge of this election of a new president, of a president, not a new president, of a president? >> i don't want they don't want to us talk about. i know what they want to alk ab >> to talk about it now? >> they want to us talk about iran, that's exactly right because that is the existential threat to israel. >> do you think in a second term obama will go along with the idea? >> with this idea here? >> yeah. >> let me put it this way. i'm willing to put a lot of >>> issue friend or foe? since the historic camp david accords, egypt has been treated as a u.s. ally and corner stone of our middle east diplomacy. president anwar sadat and hosni mubarak were frequent guests at the white house. in a recent interview with telemumdo, president obama said this regarding egypt, "i don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy." in addition to the $1.3 billion annually in military aid, egypt recently received another $1 billion

uncovered and it's raising questions about what the obama administration knew about the volatile situation going on in bengazy. the writings found four days after he and three other americans were killed in an attack. cnn reports the journal mentions quote the rise in islamic extremism and al qaeda's growing presence if libya and revealed stevens believed he was on a hit list. we know he was on the list and tonight what we don't know is who else the ambassador told about concerns and why nothing was done to ensure his protection. because one thing is certain if an american ambassador took the time to put down and put into writing he is in fear for his life he likely expressed concerns to his colleagues at the state department and throughout the administration. where are the letters and where are the e mails? in other words what is the administration trying to hide? secretary of state hillary clinton asked about this report as it began to develop last week. let's take a look at this. >> there is one report suggesting that ambassador stevens felt that he was on a qorkts al qaeda hit list. sf

sway when it comes to the white house, with the obama administration, to move any closer to his timetable? he is talking about war with iran potentially being imminent if they're able to get a nuclear weapon. >> this has been going on some time as to how close they really are. i think netanyahu makes the white house and others nervous because of the election. we saw the u.s. boycott iran's speech yesterday. they stated they weren't in the room at the general assembly because of iran's position and because it was the yom kippur holiday. they were in the room for other speeches on the yom kippur holiday. i think this will go right up to election day. the israelly leaders putting some heat on. i think there's no doubt they wouldn't mind if they saw romney get in. >> thank you very much, richard. we'll bring the speeches for you live both from mahmoud abbas as well as netanyahu. >>> it has been two weeks since the attack on the consulate in benghazi. why wasn't the fbi actually visited the skrim scene yet? we'll stake a look at the reasons. >> this is actually spain this week. this

of confidence in the data they've got. the state filed a lawsuit against the obama administration to get access to the homeland security database which is considered the best information available on citizenship. but this pro skes is just beginning and it's not going well already because i'm talking to county election supervisors today who are upset t names they got last night or the names they're getting include people who have already been removed from the roles last spring. >> why does it matter? 198 names seem to be a small number to have this political fight continue. >> an extremely small number. it's largely because the governor here, rick scott, has made this a very important priority. he has said that a vote by a noncitizen should not die lut the vote of a legitimate voter. this issue polls very well. people when asked about this are adamant. they don't think noncitizens should be voting, but in reality very few noncitizens have ever voted in a florida election from the data from what we can see. >> clearly this has a political impact here as well. the report that the new list essentia

uncovered and raising serious questions about what the obama administration knew about the volatile security situation that was going on in banghazi. the ambassador's writings were uncovered by cnn inside the u.s. consulate four days after he and three americans were killed in an orchestrated attack. cnn reports that the journal specifically mentions the rise in islamic extremism and al-qaeda's growing presence in libya. also that stevens believed he was on an al-qaeda hit list. tragically now we know that he was on that hit list, but don't what we don't know is who else the ambassador told about his concerns and why nothing was done to ensure his protection, because one thing is certain, if an american ambassador took the time to sit down and put into writing that he's in fear of his life, well, then he more than likely expressed the same concerns to his superiors and colleagues, both at the state department and throughout the administration. so where are those letters? where are those cables? where are those emails? in other words, what is the administration trying to hide? now secretary o

, but it is hard when ever single word is going to be criticized. but what about the situation about how the obama administration handled this? we have learned at cnn that the u.s. consulate in benghazi did not meet standard u.s. consulate security requirements. this is obviously a rather damning thing to be discovering at this point, considering what ended up happening there. jon huntsman told me he thinks consulates there who are not beefed up on security, shouldn't the administration be responding to that? >> i think the administration is responding to it. the state department goes to regular security procedures all over the world and updates them to take into account how the situation on the ground changes. i spent a lot of time in iraq and as we were transitioning from our military presence there to the state department presence there, we looked very closely at the security procedures at our con sue lates and embassies. so i expect in the aftermath of these incidents, there will be another review and steps will be taken to improve security where needed. >> let's talk about libya and the mixed

for israel in particular, we had to make a statement today, the obama administration did make a statement, we're not going to listen to him anymore. >> do you think that the administration made a mistake in having the president really not in action here? this is the first time, really unprecedented for him to have no bilateral meetings not with just our closest aallies, but morsi is here, this is a pivotal moment with egypt, he spoke to the united nations, all these meetings held by hillary clinton and not by the president of the united states. jon stewart interviewing king abdullah of jordan last night and posing that question. >> you were at the u.n. today. does anyone -- is there any discussion amongst world leaders about the american president not being available for face-to-face meetings? is that upsetting? >> not that i heard. everybody is there preparing for their speeches and side meetings with other leaders. that went an issue. >> we are, in fact, perhaps in some respects blowing this out of proportion is this. >> most likely probably. >> the king being diplomatic and polite. what ab

, the obama administration is still trying to determine who was responsible for the assault on the u.s. mission in benghazi tt killed a u.s. ambassador earlier this month. >> i think pretty clearly it was a terrorist attack. >> brown: at the pentagon today, defense secretary leon panetta seemed to have little doubt about what happened at the u.s. consulate in libya more than two weeks ago. >> a group of terrorists obviously conducted that attack on the consulate and against our individuals. what terrorists were involved, i think, remains to be determined by an investigation, but it clearly was a group of terrorists who conducted that attack against the facility. >> brown: what seemed clear today, though, had seemed less so just days ago. the original explanation for what happened the evening of september 11 was that an america-made movie denigrating islam had incited a mob, which had then stormed the u.s. consulate in benghazi. that attack left four americans dead, including u.s. ambassador to libya, christopher stephens. but in the weeks since, even as protests spread across the mu

've heard again and again from obama administration officials that the sanctions are beginning to bite and they should be given more time. >> bill: interesting. thank you. good to see you tonight. >>> the boat crash that killed 38 people now at the center of a criminal investigation. police in hong kong arresting seven crew members after a ferry and a large boat slamming into each other late yesterday. at least four children among the many victims there. officials say it appears the crew members on both vessels failed to follow proper procedure. but still no word on exactly what caused that crash. >>> jimmy hoffa is still out there somewhere. police in detroit say they've gotten back the results of tests from a suburban backyard. they were taking samples after a tipster said he thought he saw somebody bury a body 35 years ago. the question was, could it have been the former teamsters boss who disappeared in 1975? well, now we know it's not him. not only that, tests reveal nobody is buried in that backyard. no trace of human decomposition at all. so we go now back to square one. >>> pre
